With festival season just around the corner, many of you are on the market for a bluetooth speaker.  Specter Wireless, a new company out of Texas, recently offered me the opportunity to test out one of their products: the AQSTIX™.  This portable speaker offers most of the same features as its competitors, yet also solves many issues that pertain specifically to our festival needs. Let’s review:

DURABILITY

Probably one of the most important features is durability.  Thankfully, the AQSTIX™ is housed in an ultra-rugged, rubber compression-sealed shell, allowing for drops and bumps.  Basically, it’s #WookProof.  So when Hurricane Kittens comes sasquatching through your campsite, you can focus more on shielding your precious gemstones instead of worrying if the speaker will get damaged in the stampede.

It’s also 100% waterproof – rated for use of up to 3 feet submerged underwater!  So whether you’re chilling by the stream at Sonic Bloom, or trapped in a monsoon at Infrasound, you can rest assured your AQSTIX™ will still pump out the chunes if it gets wet.

SOUND

Speaking of sound, this little guy is like a Funktion-One in your pocket!  Not really but, with dual 10W speakers, it’s surprisingly the loudest of this size that I’ve ever heard!  Too often, when companies make “water-proof” speakers, there’s inadvertently a loss in audio quality due to it being muffled from the protective coating.  That’s not the case with the AQSTIX™.  It was engineered with music in mind first, keeping it crisp & clear so your STS9 doesn’t have to sound like it’s coming from a Dixie cup just because some spunion might spill her kombucha on it.

But what about the bass?  I purposely tried to blow the lid off this thing, but it’s insatiable.  At full volume, I blasted everything from Boogie T to Eprom, of course some Nectar, and even a little Excision. The bass is as rich and powerful as a Rothschild.  It actually handles the wubs leagues better than a speaker I own that cost twice as much – which is really annoying, honestly, but props to Specter Wireless.

FEATURES

One of my favorite parts about this speaker is that all of the buttons are LED illuminated by touch.  So even in your darkest of k-holes, you’ll be able find the volume controls.  There’s also a battery indicator that will give you a better idea of just how much longer you have before you need to re-charge.  By the way, battery life lasts up to 12 hours on this baby.

While we’re on the topic of battery life, if you don’t want to waste yours streaming music over NFC or Bluetooth, this speaker shines by giving you two other options:  an AUX jack and a micro SD card slot.  This allows you to either connect an old iPod, or simply load up an SD card with your favorite mixes, saving your precious cell battery for more important things like linking back up with the plug.

The all-star here though is the USB port.  It can be used as a power source to recharge your phone, or you can connect an external battery pack to recharge the speaker – both can be done while the speaker is still in use, so there’s no interruption of the jams.  Lastly, the AQSTIX™ comes with a strong nylon strap & carabiner so you can keep your hands free to carry those hetti trades.
