Agent Zero’s sound is an outstanding example of the marriage between modern technology and musical ingenuity. The Philadelphia-bred livetronica ensemble (spearheaded by producer Noah Selwyn) reaches soul-cleansing heights through genuine melodies entwined with gripping bass lines and a generous dash of emotion. ‘The Awakening,’ their most recent project out on 5/4, brings the very best of Agent Zero to the forefront. It’s nothing short of the group’s most refined collection of exhilarating atmospheres, moments, and sounds.
One track in particular stands out as a dose of distinct authenticity amongst the projects otherwise fierce and danceable spirit. It’s called “The Drake Track” and, regardless of intention, it’s wistful guitar riff is reminiscent of Drake’s own unique delivery. In contrast to the more precise, technical melodies characterizing “The Calling” and “Hearts on Fire,” “The Drake Track” exhibits a tender sentimentality that’s easy to relate to, and too difficult to resist.
It’s likely other tracks on “The Awakening” will frequent Agent Zero’s full band performances more often than “The Drake Track” – they’re notably tight, energetic, and exude the group’s iconic high-octane ambience. Still, “The Drake Track” is crafted from moments of absorbing intimacy, effortlessly making itself something you didn’t know you needed.
