Four shows in, the Boom Room is making waves in Philadelphia. This cooperative effort by Aspire Higher and The Funky Dad has been the breath of fresh air the bass music scene desperately needed.

The Boom Room isn’t your typical music venue. It’s actually a loft-style recording studio with an intimate vibe that can comfortably hold 75 music enthusiasts. The sound system is crisp and not so overpowering it leaves your brain in shambles the next day. The vibe and energy make it feel like Philly’s own Boiler Room.

The venue has hosted the likes of Truth, Joe Nice, Plastician, and most recently Goth-Trad – a Japanese bass music producer. While the Boom Room shows draw international talent, they also promote local artists such as Backpack, Werm, and Jay Zer0.

One thing is for certain at the Boom Room, you aren’t going to be hearing top 40 dance music. The first four shows hosted some of the best dubstep artists in the game. Truth set things off with a two hour set that was nothing short of amazing. Joe Nice, who headlined Boom Room 002, pioneered the dubstep scene in North America. Plastician hosted Boom Room 003 and spun hours of fresh UK grime by artists such as JME, Sir Spyro, Skepta, Meridian Dan, Stormzy and D Doubble E. This was actually the first time I had ever heard any grime tracks mixed into a set and I loved every minute of it. Goth-Trad hosted the most recent event with supreme control of the decks and a vinyl mixing style vastly different from what is traditionally practiced.

True to form, The Funky Dad and Aspire Higher are keeping things fresh by switching it up a bit. The 5th installment moves away from dubplates and towards a more psychedelic ambient sound. On March 24th Supersillus and Templo will be taking control of the decks. Be sure to grab your tickets early because these events do sell out quickly! Oh, and did I mention that these parties are BYOB? #gamechanger #lit
