Discovering new music is part of our every day job. The good stuff, however, frequently gets lost in the incessant flood of articles, memes, photos, and shitposts. That’s why, over here at The Wook of Wall Street, we’re constantly sifting through the digital wastelands, searching for those uncovered gems. Songs that have been overlooked, forgotten, or simply lost in the minutiae of social media . That’s what this whole new series is all about: a weekly dose of unearthed fire that we each can’t seem to get enough of. Check out this week’s finds below!

SHAWN

SOMATOAST – “BROKEN BITS”

SHAWN: Although he’s brand new to me, Bruce informed me that Somatoast is that damn boi, and after listening to “Broken Bits,” I wholeheartedly agree. This track is a semi-slow burn that truly catches its stride mid-way through and doesn’t relent. With gooey world vibes and some delectably drippy melodies, Somatoast has me coming back again and again for this meditative masterpiece.

SQUID

COPYCATT – “MEAT GRINDER”

SQUID: I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: MF DOOM is the only artist who can wear a mask on stage and not look like a total fool. His bars also happen to sound particularly saucy laid over a gooey, grinding “bash-hop” bass track, as COPYCATT demonstrates in “meat grinder.” The new rendition breathes fresh life into DOOM’s already pulverizing lyrics, burrowing their way into your brainwaves alongside the track’s abrasive low-end synths. Every time this track comes on I’m “tripping off the beat, kinda,” as the opening lyrics state.

BRUCE

VCTRE – “BANDIT”

BRUCE: No one samples quite like VCTRE. The kid can take an obscure, hilarious video about a homeless man bringing a dead raccoon into a McDonald’s, and transform it into the neuro-jazz behemoth that is “Bandit”. I’ve low-key had this track on repeat all month, but hearing those gritty distortions punch through cascading 80’s synths felt all too appropriate on my windows-down commute into work on this beautiful morning.
